waffles for hope world tour
animinneapolis 2019, may 24-26
canadian center for men and families
We've arrived at Animinneapolis, and we're expecting to make about 1000 fresh delicious belgian waffles! This time we're benefiting a different charity I love, the Canadian Center for Men and Families. They provide crisis support, especially domestic violence relief, to men and their kids. A large minority of those who suffer DV are male, but resources to help them are almost nonexistent. That's why I am proud to drum up direct support as well as raise awareness of CCMF's good work. We're hoping to raise nearly as much here at Animinni as we do at Detour.
why this cause and not child's play?Child's Play Charity is very well funded, and I want to make sure that every cent raised helps people who need it, quickly.
The Canadian Center for Men and Families is leading the way as one of very few organizations recognizing and helping battered men. I stand with them that nobody should live in fear in their own home, and nobody should face that alone, They provide a number of support resources and are expanding how they help people flee violence and protect their children. Soon they will be opening the first domestic abuse shelter for men and their families in Canada (and one of few in the world). This will help demonstrate the need for such services and assist others who would help in this way. |
want to donate electronically? The primary way we raise funds is by collecting cash and donating it electronically. If you would like to donate directly to the charity, please
go to the Canadian Center for Men and Families GoFundMe page. I would appreciate if you then used the contact form on this site to let me know about your donation so I can track the results of our efforts. If you would like to help us run this event again and again, for CCMF or for another charity, click here and let me know what cause, convention, or toppings you want your assistance to help towards, and I'll do my very best. To those who aren't able to get a waffle, much warm crispy love. |
Success! thanks to those who contributed or shared!
A few wonderful friends of the Waffle Room contributed to help us tackle Animinneapolis! We're going to run for around 12 hours, at 80 waffles per hour, and were able to pick up a pretty solid assortment of toppings. We couldn't get everything we wanted (only 13 pounds of Nutella), but we should be able to feed a lot of congoers and raise a good bit for charity regardless . A few local Gamestop store leaders were generous to provide promo material for prize support, so we should be able to have some neat donation rewards for people (You may be able to pick up a poster for a certain detective who has been sleuthing lately...).
Please stop by and grab some delicious waffles! Much love always!

a mini waffle day, with big deliciousness, for an incredible cause
I was able to help out at an event at my now former employer. The Waffle Room gear was used to put on a waffle breakfast for employees, where we served about 70 waffles and raised over $300 for charity! It was in support of the wonderful Children's Miracle Network, specifically helping the Gilette Children's Hospital in Minnesota. One of my colleagues shared with me a story of how CMN had saved his brother in law's life as a child by providing a procedure, and given hope to his family by wiping out their debt. Generally the charities Waffles For Hope chooses are those that can make a big difference with just a little funds, but I was so pleased to be able to help, even just providing a little equipment and a little time. There are opportunities to spread the love everywhere.
gofundme launched to make an impact at animinneapolis 2019 and beyondThrough 2018 I was able to run Waffles For Hope out of pocket. Unfortunately that has become unfeasible for the time being, particularly to run multiple events per year as I would like to do. Thus the launch of a crowdfunding campaign. This should get us decked out to do amazing work for the upcoming convention, with any possible spillover going toward more events in 2019 and 2020. Thanks a ton everybody for reading, and if you'd like to do more, for that too.
We'll be at anniminneapolis 2019, may 24-26, giving away waffles and fundraising for charityI have yet to announce the charity because I'm still gathering information for public presentation. The short of it is that there are populations which are incredibly underserved when it comes to shelters to escape domestic violence. The charity both raises awareness of this and is working to create resources for battered people who have few options.

Why not donate to the charity directly?
These events provide total value much greater than their cost. Waffles For Hope always are incredible events, with a huge amount of fun and community. It informs hundreds about the charity who wouldn't otherwise know, the waffles we serve at fandom conventions are an alternative to rice, ramen, or overpriced hotel food, and the amount raised for the charity substantially exceeds the cost of the event.
Historically, after all expenses are considered, each waffle served costs $1.25-$2.00. Each of those is worth ~$5 to the person who gets it for free. Approximately $1.50-$3.00 is raised for charity per waffle. Donation rewards cost about a tenth what people give in exchange for them. Most people who get a waffle learn about the charity, and on aggregate individuals get approximately 2 waffles per event. This means for $2000, I can serve 1300 waffles, providing $6500 in food, raise $3000 for a cause, give away $2000 in donation rewards, and inform 500 people about a charity if they didn't already know. To my best guess, it's worth it five times over.

waffles for hope 20xx: 2d edition
Waffles for Hope still intends to expand to more than one event per year. Unfortunately, things fell through with 2D this year. We thank everyone for their support, and we'll see you next year!
The following original post is no longer relevant. Finally we're doing a second event in a year! And to celebrate that we've decided we'll be benefiting another charitable organization. Detour will still be 100% for Child's Play, but we're trying something new as we run at a new convention! Hopefully we can figure out some kind of donation widget to make it easy for anybody who wants to pitch in to do so. Join us at 2D Con, August 3rd-5th at the Bloomington Doubletree. SEE YOU THERE!

Waffles for hope 2018 donation widget
Waffles for Hope 2018 was a hilariously good time and a proposterous success. We upgraded to 4 double waffle irons at the new location at Anime Detour 2018. I'm not sure how we managed the power draw, it got really warm in our room. That was eight waffles cooking at a time, churning out one every 45 seconds. Only the lovely Mrs. Waffles can handle the irons now, she's gone beyond the wafflemaking capacity of mortal man. We served something like 900 waffles and it was incredible. The generosity was un-freakin-believable - the tracker there doesn't include the $500 check to Child's Play from one of our incredibly generous donors.

We are ready to rock and roll! Four irons, Seventy boxes of waffle mix, sixteen pounds of Nutella, two gallons of syrup, and about six other delicious toppings, not to mention donation incentives for people on site have been cleared. Lets see how far we can take this! Last year was a huge success, let's see if we can duplicate it! Thanks so much everybody!
WAFFLES FOR HOPE 2016 MADE A CHANGE!
From 2011 to 2014, we served eggos, rocking the equivalent of between four and six regular household toasters. In 2016, we decided to make our return to form totally legit, and started making fresh Belgian waffles, with three irons running nonstop for the whole time we were open.
Unfortunately we didn't have a Child's Play Charity widget keeping track of donations, but that was totally fine. We raised just over $2,000 for charity over the course of the weekend. What a spectacular success!

We raised over $600!!! Thank you guys for your generosity!!!
Welcome to Waffles for Hope!
Each year at Anime Detour in Minneapolis, MN we give out hundreds of free waffles to hungry con goers to raise awareness for Child's Play charity. We love the charity and as gamers we could not agree more that we, as a group, need to give back. What's not to love about giving toys and games to sick kids? We would like to spread the Waffle Room to other events and cons to raise even more awareness for this wonderful charity! We hope that if you come by the waffle room you will enjoy a waffle with us and have a good time! See you there! Click HERE to Donate!
Since 2011 Waffles for Hope has been raising funds for Child's Play and for 2014 we're teching up our operation and expanding what we do. This year we've established this website, submitted our event to Child's Play directly so that donations can be made on-line and tracked as inspired from what we're doing. We'll also be holding a free raffle for some nifty stuff, much of it made by Fluffles For Joy, and, if things work out, holding a small charity auction as well. You should check out Fluffles' site, who makes and sells some very cute things.
